Constantly tired and no motivation: the flat week, from someone who trains through it

When I have a flat week, I protect my sleep, lower the target and keep one small promise each day. Here is the routine I use.

Sofia Storm — Muay Thai six mornings a week, kenjutsu at the weekend

At dawn I am holding pads while the harbour is still cold and grey. My arms feel slow, and the first kick I catch lands with all the authority of a wet sock. I train six mornings a week, but some weeks I am tired before I begin and no better when I finish.

If you are constantly tired, no motivation appears, and everything you meant to do now feels strangely far away, I know the territory. You are tired at nine in the evening and tired again at seven in the morning. Food is dull. Work waits. Even the things you normally like ask too much of you. Nothing is dramatically wrong, which almost makes it worse.

I used to treat this as a test of courage. I would plan a hard session, fail to want it, then blame myself. It never helped. Now I reduce the work and keep the routine alive.

Find out which tired you have

There is tired from too much. Too little sleep, hard training, late nights, too many promises. The answer is to remove something and recover. I cut the session, eat, and go to bed. I do not call this weakness because I am not twelve.

Then there is tired from nothing. You have done little, yet starting feels heavy. This one is worse because rest does not feel like rest. I do not think my way out of it. I use a physical action: a walk around the block, a shower, dishes washed, wraps put in the bag.

Tired for weeks with nothing changing it is a doctor's question, not a motivation question.

For an ordinary flat week, be honest about the cause. If you have taken too much from yourself, take less. If you have stopped moving, move briefly.

Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.

Protect the three things that decide tomorrow

I care less about rescuing today than stopping it from stealing tomorrow. I protect a few plain things before I start bargaining.

  1. Set one sleep hour. Pick the time you will be in bed. Put the phone out of reach and keep the appointment. One fixed hour beats a beautiful new routine you abandon tonight.
  2. Eat actual food. Do not wait to feel inspired by dinner. Choose something ordinary that you can eat. Flat weeks are no time to survive on coffee and whatever is nearest.
  3. Move for a short time. Train if training is already your habit. Otherwise walk. Ten quiet minutes count. Stop when you said you would. The purpose is to keep contact with movement, not to prove that you can suffer.

This is discipline with the volume turned down. If you want the longer version, read my guide to building self-discipline. It is mostly about making fewer decisions when your mood is a poor commander.

Tonight: choose your bed hour, put tomorrow's first meal in view, and set shoes by the door for a ten-minute walk.

Make the minimum version almost too small

Your normal target may be too much for a bad week. I lower it until starting feels easy: one round on the bag, five minutes with the sword, or a walk to the end of the street and back. Then I can stop without feeling guilty.

The minimum version is not a trick for making yourself do the full version. That bargain is dishonest, and after a few attempts you stop trusting it. The minimum is the assignment. More is allowed, never owed. When I finish the short session, I mark it done. The line held.

You may need this rule for several days. Fine. A campaign is not lost because the army stays behind the wall while the road is mud. Keep the sleep hour. Eat. Do the small movement. These acts are not impressive, which is one reason they work.

If the trouble is starting rather than tiredness, read how to stay motivated when the feeling is absent. On a morning when you need a short order instead of another plan, use daily motivation. And if one clean line is enough, the discipline quotes are there.

Tell me your minimum version and the hour you will do it. I send one verified quote, one photo from my morning, and one question each day. You can switch the daily message off with /daily. For now, tell me on Telegram what you are going to do, and I will ask tomorrow whether you did it.

Do it with someone watching

Sofia Storm will ask tomorrow whether you did the thing. Say hi in Telegram and tell her what it is.
